How is the course delivered?

Training is delivered via Pre-course learning + face-to-face training.

Course Duration: This course is designed to be completed in 2 days.

Expected Study Hours: Typical learners are expected to spend approximately 14 hours depending on existing knowledge, skills, and experience.

What will you learn?

This course is designed to develop your expertise in providing first aid. Among others, you will learn to:

  • Respond to an emergency situation.
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures.
  • Communicate details of the incident.
  • Review the incident.

How is the course structured?

All learners will be assessed through:

  • Questioning – Written or Verbal
  • Scenario-based assessments
  • Practical skills demonstration assessments
  • Observation in a simulated environment

What are the entry requirements?

There are no prerequisites required to enter this course. However, it is preferred that students:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and over
  • Be living or working in Australia
  • Have successfully completed at least Australian high school year 10, or equivalent
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Have sound Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills
  • Have good general health and fitness for practicals*

Each of the units of competency that this strategy applies to specifies that students must, among other things, be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, to be deemed as competent. They also must be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.

Students must also be able to perform manual handling tasks safely. Therefore, prospective students need to have the physical attributes to be able to:

  • Bring themselves to floor level to perform the above task.
  • Perform each of the above tasks uninterrupted for two minutes.
  • Have the physical capacity to perform manual handling tasks safely.

*Students who do not meet the LLN requirements of the course may still enrol into the course provided the trainer has endorsed the enrolment, and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.


What are the resources needed to complete the course?

To support you in your new course with Core Skills Training Services, we will provide the following:

  • HLTAID011 student kit, which includes:
    • Learner guides for each unit of competency
    • Assessment Workbooks for each subject,
    • Templates for projects and other activities, and
    • Handouts
  • Guidelines and procedure including:
    • Relevant ARC guidelines to managing the unconscious breathing and non-breathing casualty and provision of CPR
    • Potential incident hazards and risk minimisation processes when providing first aid
    • Infection control procedures, including use of standard precautions and resuscitation barrier devices
    • Requirements for currency of skill and knowledge
    • First aid codes of practice
    • Appropriate workplace or site procedures relevant to the provision of first
    • Contents of first aid kits
  • Adult and infant resuscitation manikins following ARC guidelines for the purpose of assessment of CPR procedures
  • Adrenaline auto-injector training device
  • AED training device
  • Workplace first aid kit
  • Placebo bronchodilator and spacer device
  • Different types of wound dressings and bandages
  • Blankets and items to treat for shock
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Workplace injury, trauma or illness record, or other applicable workplace or site incident report form.

Students arrange their own access to the following:

  • A computer (PC or Mac) with internet access and browser (Google Chrome is recommended)
  • Installed software, including Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • A video and audio recording device (e.g., mobile phone, webcam with microphone, video camera, etc)

What are the Qualification Pathways?

Learners may also consider additional training to complement your skills in first aid, with courses such as:

Is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) available?

Due to the nature of this course and the ARC guidelines, students will be required to do a refresher course annually instead of getting RPL.
